Hay Fever
Allergic rhinitis, commonly referred to as “hay fever”, is caused by the immune system overreacting to harmless substances in nature such as pollen, dander, and dust.
It causes inflammation in the nasal cavity leading to symptoms of stuffy nose, runny nose, post-nasal drip, sneezing, and itchy nose.
The allergens causing these symptoms can be year round, referred to as perennial, such as dog and cat dander, mold, and dust mites or can be seasonal such as grass, tree, or weed pollen. It is estimated that between 40,000,000-50,000,000 people in the United States suffer from allergic rhinitis.
Allergic rhinitis has been shown to reduce quality of life, sleep quality, performance at work or school, participation in outdoor activities, and results in days missed from work or school. Allergy testing can identify those items to which you are allergic. Based on results, a treatment plan can be made with the goal of reducing symptoms as much as possible.
There are many treatment options for allergies. The physicians at Highland Park Allergy and Asthma Specialists will work with you to determine the best treatment plan for your lifestyle to help you live allergy-free.
